starcraft II

I know that I said that I wouldn’t be as video heavy as in the past, but this trailer for the upcoming RTS Starcraft 2 is just too good to pass up. As many have said before, Blizzard should think about producing films as well as games…

assasin’s creed: brotherhood

A semi-sequel to Assassin’s Creed II (let’s call it 2.5 shall we?), Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood is bringing multiplayer to the once lonely world of Ezio. Here’s the E3 trailer for the game that will be coming out this fall.

the old republic

Well, that second thing that got me excited about a game shown at E3? It’s Star Wars the Old Republic of course. Having blown me away with last year’s trailer, Bioware has again gone to the same studio to create this year’s standout trailer. I have to admit though, this trailer actually makes me sad that they’re not making another movie using this studio more than it actually gets me excited about the game the upcoming game.

scott pilgram

Oh summer, you fickle beast. You get us excited with all of your blockbuster movies, but then we feel bad for watching them during your warm sunny days. Well, I’m hoping that this new film based on a comic book series of the same name will be good enough to spare a couple hours of outdoor time for. Allow me to introduce you to Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.

blur

Though not a huge fan of the game itself (it wasn’t bad, just not my cup of tea), Halo Wars had some amazing cutscenes. I was so impressed, in fact, that I went to track down who was behind them and it turns out that Blur Studios not only did these impressive cutscenes, but also had a hand in some of the most impressive animations that I witnessed last year. Here’s a greatest hit reel from 2009.

procrastination

If I’m honest with myself (and really why wouldn’t you be?), one of my biggest downfalls is my ability to procrastinate like no other. It’s really too bad that you can’t get paid for being a good procrastinator, because I could sure use the money. Well, the following video trys to outline what exactly procrastination is. It’s great animation and stop motion, going over more than one method I use to procrastinate. In fact, the only method that it doesn’t mention is writing a blog. Procrastination is writing a blog…

Now that Spirit has essentially kicked the bucket (you can almost hear the “I’m not dead yet” from here), it’s time to look to the future. Though it’s been delayed, the next rover mission to Mars will be the Mar Science Laboratory and is slated to make its entry into the Martian atmosphere in 2012. And what an entry that promises to be… Check out the video below to watch the kung-fu that the next rover will have to go through in order to reach its destination. And just remember, all of this will need to be scripted since there is no realtime communication as it plummets down to the red planet (that whole speed of light thing always gets in the way). You can also go to the team’s site here. Note: for some reason it the video runs better in 480p.

code hunters

There are some seriously talented animators out there and here’s an example, it’s done by the folks at Axis Animation and director Ben Hibon. I usually present short videos for our short attention spans, but this one kind of breaks the bank in terms of how long it is so be fore-warned. The animation style is reminiscent of the video game Borderlands (although this came out before the game and was actually one of its sources of inspiration), and the old MTV animations of Aeon Flux. You can also check out Hibon’s awesome site on the code hunters here. Story? I’ve never seen bug fixing be so dangerous…

a day in paris

Yes this video has a robot. Yes, it’s seamlessly integrated into the real world with great affect. But my favorite part of this video is the sense that you get about what Paris is like on a nice summer’s day. I’ve only been there a couple of times, but it’s one of my favorite cities in the world. And… it has a robot.
