scott pilgram

Oh summer, you fickle beast. You get us excited with all of your blockbuster movies, but then we feel bad for watching them during your warm sunny days. Well, I’m hoping that this new film based on a comic book series of the same name will be good enough to spare a couple hours of outdoor time for. Allow me to introduce you to Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.

blur

Though not a huge fan of the game itself (it wasn’t bad, just not my cup of tea), Halo Wars had some amazing cutscenes. I was so impressed, in fact, that I went to track down who was behind them and it turns out that Blur Studios not only did these impressive cutscenes, but also had a hand in some of the most impressive animations that I witnessed last year. Here’s a greatest hit reel from 2009.

Here’s some more tron love. This time for the original… know your roots. Oh, and yes it’s been re-worked for our modern eyes (love those suits).

So the attempt to resurrect old franchises and movies continues, and I suppose that when you think about it this was bound to happen. I mean, all of us kids that were introduced to these movies and cartoons as kids are now making the movies. Sometimes this tendency to regurgitate the old can be depressing (see the Transformers and GI Joe movies), but every once in a while something comes around to make you smile like that little kid who saw it when it first came out…

the last airbender

I came across this series recently after being interested in the trailer below. Looks to be a fun action movie, and what I’ve seen of the animated show it has a good amount of potential. And then I found out that it’s being directed by M. Night Shyamalan… please M. Night, please don’t screw this up. Check out more trailers here.

neill on aliens

The director of District 9(one of the more interesting films to come out last year), Neill Blomkamp was invited by the ubiquitous and always interesting TED organization to give a talk. Unfortunately for those in attendance he wasn’t able to make it in person, but fortunately for us he made a short film for us to watch instead. The premise has to do with what he thinks real aliens might look like, and if those represented in District 9 represent his views on the subject. His answer is interesting in that it deals first with the “if” factor of whether or not an alien species exists and then rolls out a couple of logical conclusions some people have had when assuming certain outcomes of the evolution of a civilization. Although it doesn’t address some pressing issue’s on the topic, including the Fermi-Hart paradox, and the issues of scale and timing that you’re dealing with when you talk about interstellar space, it’s an interesting piece so check it out.

code hunters

There are some seriously talented animators out there and here’s an example, it’s done by the folks at Axis Animation and director Ben Hibon. I usually present short videos for our short attention spans, but this one kind of breaks the bank in terms of how long it is so be fore-warned. The animation style is reminiscent of the video game Borderlands (although this came out before the game and was actually one of its sources of inspiration), and the old MTV animations of Aeon Flux. You can also check out Hibon’s awesome site on the code hunters here. Story? I’ve never seen bug fixing be so dangerous…

banff

It’s that time of year again. Banff is coming to town, and bringing with it all of the amazing films and photography to get us excited about adventure for the next year. If you haven’t yet gone to a Banff Mountain Film Festival, you need to remedy this as soon as possible. Every November all of the mountain and outdoor sports world convene in Banff, Alberta to show off what they’ve been doing for the last year, whether it be literally skiing off of a mountain or tracking down a man eating tiger in Siberia. It’s a must see every year. You can check out their homepage here, to find out when and where the nearest location to you will happen. Also, check out the trailer for this year’s films after the break.

sherlock

This is just a quick shout out for a movie that many might overlook with all of the Avatar mania going around. The new Sherlock Holmes movie, directed by Guy Ritchie, is a well paced action movie with a fresh take on the eternal detective from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Robert Downey Jr. continues his unexpected comeback to the big screen with an amazing performance as Mr. Holmes, while Jude Law fills out the role of the ever-present Watson with a surprisingly convincing performance. The film is fast, and has some of the usual tropes employed by Ritchie, while at the same time holding to the character’s original identities amazingly well. Go see it during these rainy storms that we’re about to suffer through, or if you need more prompting you can see the trailer here. Below is an image from a proposed graphic novel based on the movie by artist John Watkiss. Also, click on the image at the bottom to see a clip of the amazing end credits from the movie (it’s not too spoilerish). They are probably one of my favorite credits sequences to date.
