Chewbacca riding a squirrel into battle against Nazis. Enough said. Check out Tyler Edlin’s other work here.

Is there really much more that I can say about these paintings beyond their obvious brilliance? No. So I won’t. The portraits are done to perfection by artist Greg Peltz. Found via Josh Spear.

Hey everyone, sorry about the hiatus. I’ve been working on a new design for the site, but realized that I can’t just neglect it while I’m doing that so I promise to keep posting. I decided to go with something that has a lot of color, and isn’t another video… So I’ve decided to show you an amazing artist named Francois Nielly who was born in Marseille and is now living in Paris. She does her work from black and white photos and uses a painting trowel instead of a brush. Check out her site here. Via Cool Hunter.

Here’s a fresh artist, Andy Thomson, that continues the western theme promoted by Red Dead Redemption. I especially like the Spaghetti Western influences in the first piece. You can go and check him out here at Society6.
lost

Now that it’s entering the home stretch, few can say that the TV series Lost is anything but a major piece of the popular consciousness pie from the last decade. Like it, love it, or despise it, Lost has captured the imagination of many, including graphic designer Alex Griendling who has taken the iconography of the show’s first season one step further by playing with the cultish aspects of the series, making the main characters into their own Tarot cards. I’m not much of a mystic (sorry Laura!) and don’t subscribe to the charlatianism of Tarot readings, but at least with these cards I wouldn’t mind watching them being meaningfully flipped over (love that the smoke is present in every card). Check out the whole set here. Thanks Charlie.
god of war

It’s only fitting that upon the recent release of God of War 3 that it’s protagonist, angst-ridden Kratos, should be found being angry in a renaissance painting (specifically Anne-Louis Girodet de Roussy-Trioson’s “Revolt In Cairo”). The game’s art direction is pretty amazing, but this takes it to another level of course. Apparently Kratos was born to be revolting in Cairo. The piece is part of Worth 1000′s photoshop, found via Kotaku.
There’s a cool interactive feature that Scientific American has up right now, showing some of the more awe inspiring places in the solar system complete with art by Ron Miller and media describing each place. The tour goes from the immense Valles Marineris on Mars, to the storms of Jupiter’s atmosphere, to the geysers on Saturn’s moon Iapetus. It’s a nice reminder that these things that we study in Planetary Science are actual places and not just odd physics problems that need to be solved. Go here to check it out. Found via Boing Boing.
fonts

In the world of design we get pretty excited about fonts, the rest of the world… not so much. Until now that is! Check out these classic fonts with their classic counterparts. They’re pretty rad. Found by Jon on Fineline Design.
Cayetano

Cayetano Valenzuela is an artist enomoured with the depiction of memory and dreams, which definitely comes through with his work. The striking colors, and odd placements of figures illicit that feeling that you get upon waking from a particularly vivid dream where everything seemed to make sense when it was happening but now just seems weird. You can check out some of his prints here, his website here, and a blog here.

If you’re in the Los Angeles area, here’s an interesting show that you might want to take time to check out. The artists that work for the video game company Naughty Dog (makers most recently of Uncharted 2: Among Thieves), have a show that’s appropriately called “Unleashed: The Art of Naughty Dog” that showcases these artists’ talents beyond some of the beautiful concept art that I’ve shown here in the past. The show is at the Gnomon Gallery in LA.
