Here’s a great video of something new and positive coming out of Oakland. Kids blinging out their bikes creatively.

Well Santa Cruz Bicycles continues to up the anty on their line of bikes by giving their already great Nomad a carbon makeover. By their reckoning the bike has lost 1.25 lbs in weight while actually getting stronger. Sounds like their are only upsides to this change, and has me seriously wondering if I’m man enough to handle the crazy 160mm of suspension that this thing provides. It should be going on sale in a couple of months, but in the meantime you can start building your own custom config using their website and the present aluminum model (just remember to subtract the pounds from that estimated weight at the top). I love the bicycle industry. It’s one of those rare beasts that has a decent mixture of huge companies with the mega bucks, and smaller outfits that cater to the bicycle obsessed. One of those smaller outfits, Portland Design Works, comes to us from the great Northwest bike mecca and illustrates why those of us that have a mind for design support the little guy. You can check out their site here.
Having gone on several bike touring trips overseas, I’ve often wondered why bike transportation is so clunky. Apparently someone else has too, since the company Biknd has come out with a nice and light case called the Helium Case that inflates with a foot pump to keep your bike nice and secure. Apparently the case is only 9.5kg, which would have been nice on more than one bike trip that I can think of. It also collapses to a decent size so that when you get to your destination it won’t be as hard to stash it. Now if they would only lower that $600 barrier to entry, and if the airlines would only become reasonable with their oversized prices…

Color me excited, because I just found out that the guys behind my favorite bike film Seasons (and others such as The Collective and Roam) are about to come out with their latest film Follow me. Coming out in May on iTunes and DVD (where’s my Blu-Ray?!), the film looks amazing. I’m very tempted to check out their debut viewing in mid April at the Sea Otter classic down in Monterey… VERY tempted.

Just wanted to share another film that was included in this year’s Banff Film Festival. This one comes from the fine people at Radical Films and is titled Kranked – Revolved. It’s the typical adrenaline filled film, but has some amazing riding and great cinematography to make it stand out. The film that was in Banff was just a snipet of the full film, but it was enough to make me interested.

Highlighted in this month’s Picture of the Month (or POM) over on PinkBike.com, Cory Tepper’s photography is pretty amazing. Of course taking pictures of one of my favorite activities is a quick way to get my attention, but he definitely has a tendency to find the right angles and always has an eye on the lighting and colors present in his photos. You can check more out at his homepage or travel on over to Pink Bike.

Cannondale has a penchant for creating these amazing concept bikes, and the newly realized “Dutchess” is no different. The cruiser style bike has some of the cleanest lines that I’ve seen. It gives the feeling of a classic frame that you would normally see on the streets of Amsterdam, while being completely modern. Designed by Wytze van Mansum as his final graduation project for Delft University of Technology, the bike only currently exists as a working prototype. So here’s to hoping that it actually gets made, unlike some of Cannondales previously beautiful concepts. Found via BikeBiz.

Here’s a short bike film (32min), showcasing the talents of a bunch of riders in the Southeast as they bomb down rocky trails, float above kickers, or play around at the local bike park. It’s a fun watch, and is a perfect fix for all of us that are pining for our local trails that the weather has been denying us lately. The director, Jacob Gibbons, is a still photographer (as you can probably tell from the photos below), but does a good job with the motion side of things by keeping each frame and cut interesting. Also, did I mention that it’s free to watch? No? Well it is, so check out the trailer below and the film in its entirety after the break. Found via Pinkbike.

For all of you that haven’t yet come across the prolific blog of the Bike Snob of NYC, I pity you. Though you may have inadvertently been a part of the blog (see unsuspecting bike designers below, as the Bike Snob expounds on the importance of chest to button distance in the design world), you should go over and check it out as soon as you can. Though he is merciless, he is fair. Woe to the hipster who unknowingly enters his world.
