restrepo

Here’s an interesting addition to the Summer’s film lineup. A documentary based on the reporter Sebastian Junger’s experiences with the U.S. Military in one of the most dangerous outposts in Afganistan, this film promises to be an eye-opening experience. I for one have only a vague picture of what Afganistan looks like, let alone what it’s like at the front lines.

I’ll admit it now, I’m a fan of the film Amelie. It’s weird, it’s french, and it had a very cute girl in the starring role. Well the director Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s new work has at least the first to factors incorporated in it, and judging by the trailer I think I may have to make the trek to the theatre this summer.

clash

Just finished watching the new version of Clash of the Titans and… it was awesome. Not awesome in the sense that it had a particularly great story, or had amazing acting. No, it was more in its total abandonment of those things for the sake of  entertainment. Clash is the kind of movie that you have to watch with the right set of expectations, and anyone who’s seen the original knows exactly what this means. See it for what it is, and it will be worth your money. One word of warning though, Pegasus isn’t worth seeing in 3-D so just see it in regular old 2-D.

Oh summer, you fickle beast. You get us excited with all of your blockbuster movies, but then we feel bad for watching them during your warm sunny days. Well, I’m hoping that this new film based on a comic book series of the same name will be good enough to spare a couple hours of outdoor time for. Allow me to introduce you to Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.

180 South

Here’s a film that I’ve been waiting patiently for during the last 6 months. It follows a trip that Yvon Chouinard did to the tip of the South America that inspired to him to create a company like Patagonia with it’s focus on saving some of the last wild places in the world.

Here’s some more tron love. This time for the original… know your roots. Oh, and yes it’s been re-worked for our modern eyes (love those suits).

follow me

Color me excited, because I just found out that the guys behind my favorite bike film Seasons (and others such as The Collective and Roam) are about to come out with their latest film Follow me. Coming out in May on iTunes and DVD (where’s my Blu-Ray?!), the film looks amazing. I’m very tempted to check out their debut viewing in mid April at the Sea Otter classic down in Monterey… VERY tempted.

that was 2009

Now that the Oscars have come and gone, everyone is looking back at the year that was 2009. In a lot of ways 2009 was a hard year for a lot of people, and for a lot of us we didn’t get out to the movies as much as we would have liked. It is for these people that I present to you this 7 minute look at the films that came out last year, and I guarantee that after viewing it you’ll be adding some to you Netflix queue. It’s a roller-coaster of emotion if you’ve seen many of the movies (much like listening to a Girl Talk album), and overall it gives a pretty awesome sense of film’s ability to allow us to escape to different worlds.

So the attempt to resurrect old franchises and movies continues, and I suppose that when you think about it this was bound to happen. I mean, all of us kids that were introduced to these movies and cartoons as kids are now making the movies. Sometimes this tendency to regurgitate the old can be depressing (see the Transformers and GI Joe movies), but every once in a while something comes around to make you smile like that little kid who saw it when it first came out…

kranked

Just wanted to share another film that was included in this year’s Banff Film Festival. This one comes from the fine people at Radical Films and is titled Kranked – Revolved. It’s the typical adrenaline filled film, but has some amazing riding and great cinematography to make it stand out. The film that was in Banff was just a snipet of the full film, but it was enough to make me interested.
