Francoise

Hey everyone, sorry about the hiatus. I’ve been working on a new design for the site, but realized that I can’t just neglect it while I’m doing that so I promise to keep posting. I decided to go with something that has a lot of color, and isn’t another video… So I’ve decided to show you an amazing artist named Francois Nielly who was born in Marseille and is now living in Paris. She does her work from black and white photos and uses a painting trowel instead of a brush. Check out her site here. Via Cool Hunter.

Cayetano

Cayetano Valenzuela is an artist enomoured with the depiction of memory and dreams, which definitely comes through with his work. The striking colors, and odd placements of figures illicit that feeling that you get upon waking from a particularly vivid dream where everything seemed to make sense when it was happening but now just seems weird. You can check out some of his prints here, his website here, and a blog here.

I recently finished watching the 2008 film Beautiful Losers, that examines the rise of street culture to mainstream acceptance in the art world. It’s an interesting film, filled with some amazing artists including the the late great Margaret Kilgallen. Sadly, she died of breast cancer in 2001 at the age of 33. Her art has an amazing feeling of nostalgia tinged with a fully modern taste. In fact the more I’m exposed to her work the more that I’m beginning to realize that it’s been around me all along.

Mexican artist Alberto Cerriteno’s work is awesomely weird. Using both painting and the digital world (mostly photoshop), he’s able to create pieces that have a large amount of depth to go with his largely two dimensional characters. Go check out more of his stuff here on his great homepage, or an inverview with him here. Enjoy. Found via Web Urbanist.

travis

The world of Travis Louie is strange yet familiar. His family portraits are ones that you might come across in the local antique store except for the obvious fact that those portrayed are actual monsters. Well, is it too harsh to call them monsters? Especially when they’re so dressed up and pleasant looking? After all, are they really all that different from crazy uncle Larry? Go check out his site for more of the good stuff.

The recently announced 75th anniversary of the San Francisco MOMA has caused me to reflect on my favorite shows that have swept through the museum. The first show to come to mind was “Forty Years of Painting” that showcased the German artist Gerhard Richter’s work. I had never seen his paintings before, and was therefore shocked to find my new favorite artist of the modern era. His work spans almost photorealistic portraits to abstract pieces spread over aluminum instead of canvas. Recently named an “honorary citizen of Cologne”, he’s still producing work and allowing people to take whatever insights they want from his pieces.

rachel

Rachel Blumberg has an incredible talent to convey a mood and completely tell a story with a single painting. Though she splits her time between being a drummer for bands like M. Ward and Norfolk and Western, she still somehow has enough time to create these amazing paintings. Go figure.

Like Deth P. Sun, Luke Chueh occupies a unique place in the art world. His characters, though sometimes morbid are as expressive through their simple actions as anything out there. Happy 2010, goodbye aughts.NostalgiaPossessedDig-DugThe-Soundtrack

Owen Freeman’s sometimes ghostly watercolors evoke a scene like few others. His work can be seen in various magazines and periodicals, lending a striking visual companion to whatever writing he’s paired with. Some of his prints can also be had through Nucleus Gallery.

herakut

I came across their work in a book that they put out recently. Going by the name herakut, the work actually consists of two separate artists by the names of Hera and Akut. She works on the stylized bodies, while he adds the realistic details. A match made in heaven.herakut_berlin_1_1000
