I know that I said that I wouldn’t be as video heavy as in the past, but this trailer for the upcoming RTS Starcraft 2 is just too good to pass up. As many have said before, Blizzard should think about producing films as well as games…

assasin’s creed: brotherhood
Jun 18
A semi-sequel to Assassin’s Creed II (let’s call it 2.5 shall we?), Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood is bringing multiplayer to the once lonely world of Ezio. Here’s the E3 trailer for the game that will be coming out this fall.
the old republic

Well, that second thing that got me excited about a game shown at E3? It’s Star Wars the Old Republic of course. Having blown me away with last year’s trailer, Bioware has again gone to the same studio to create this year’s standout trailer. I have to admit though, this trailer actually makes me sad that they’re not making another movie using this studio more than it actually gets me excited about the game the upcoming game.
portal 2

As always, there are a lot of cool things coming out of the video game conference E3 this year, but as an observer there were only two videos that really got me excited about upcoming games. Due to my affinity for its predecessor, Portal 2 was already in my consciousness but with this new trailer my desire for this game just quadrupled…
killzone 3

With the impending E3 conference looming we’re getting more and more game publishers leaking information on their next projects. Among these is the third installment in the Killzone franchise, a surprisingly pretty fps for the PS3. So far, all that we know about the project is that some of the people behind the Uncharted games will be helping the Killzone 2 people to bring the game to fruition. Oh ya… and they’re planning on giving you the option of playing it in full 3-D. And there’s snow. So there’s that.
red dead

Taking me completely by suprise is the latest from the guys and gals over at Rockstar Games, Red Dead Redemption. I admit that it wasn’t even on my radar, but now that it has an average rating of ~95 I think that I’ll have to check it out. The game takes you into the old west and due to the fact that it’s all open world, what you do in that old west is totally up to you. Track down a bear? Sure. Rob a train? Go right ahead. Cheat at cards? Only if you’re fast with that gun son.

Mr. Wake
May 18
Now that I’ve learned my lesson about getting too excited about new IP’s before they come out (case in point the abysmally reviewed Dark Void), I’ve tempered it until the game has actually come out and people have played it. This has definitely been the case with the new game Alan Wake, where I’ve actually gotten more excited about playing it since its release. A thriller based in a small town in the Pacific Northwest (one we’re NOT moving to), the game plays with narrative in a new way while not sacrificing its gameplay. Just about the only knock on the game are the facial animations, a subject that I’ll probably rant about sometime in the near future. This is all based on reviewer’s comments, however, so we shall see Mr. Wake. We shall see.

Though not a huge fan of the game itself (it wasn’t bad, just not my cup of tea), Halo Wars had some amazing cutscenes. I was so impressed, in fact, that I went to track down who was behind them and it turns out that Blur Studios not only did these impressive cutscenes, but also had a hand in some of the most impressive animations that I witnessed last year. Here’s a greatest hit reel from 2009.
god of war

It’s only fitting that upon the recent release of God of War 3 that it’s protagonist, angst-ridden Kratos, should be found being angry in a renaissance painting (specifically Anne-Louis Girodet de Roussy-Trioson’s “Revolt In Cairo”). The game’s art direction is pretty amazing, but this takes it to another level of course. Apparently Kratos was born to be revolting in Cairo. The piece is part of Worth 1000′s photoshop, found via Kotaku.

If you’re in the Los Angeles area, here’s an interesting show that you might want to take time to check out. The artists that work for the video game company Naughty Dog (makers most recently of Uncharted 2: Among Thieves), have a show that’s appropriately called “Unleashed: The Art of Naughty Dog” that showcases these artists’ talents beyond some of the beautiful concept art that I’ve shown here in the past. The show is at the Gnomon Gallery in LA.
